Heart-warming, hilarious and full of sparkles and sass! Kinky Boots has just arrived in Sydney and it is a definite must-see! Playing at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre until July 23rd, Kinky Boots will have Sydneysiders falling head over heels.
Based on the 2005 film starring Joel Edgerton and inspired by true events, Kinky Boots takes theatre goers on a hilarious and fabulous journey from a working-class shoe factory in England to the high fashion runways of Milan.
The musical tells the story of Charlie Price (played by Toby Francis) who is trying to live up to his father’s expectations and struggling to save the family shoe business after inheriting it from his father. Determined to keep the factory from bankruptcy, Charlie decides he needs to change his business direction and that’s when he meets a fashionable new friend, drag queen and cabaret performer Lola (Callum Francis). Struggling to find fabulous footwear that caters for the feet of a man, Lola gives Charlie an outrageous idea that could change both of their destinies and save the shoe factory.
Kinky Boots has all the musical theatre heavy weights on board, with Tony and Grammy winning songs by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, book by Broadway royalty Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles) and direction and choreography by Tony-Award Winner Jerry Mitchell (Legally Blonde, Hairspray), making it an extremely strong and well put together musical.
Lola and her posse of drag queens were incredible and an absolute highlight of the show. Their costumes were phenomenal and fabulous, their kicks were high and they were sassy and hilarious at all the right times. Callum Francis who plays Lola was nothing short of amazing. Callum’s performance is charismatic, hilarious and dignified and he absolutely steals the show.
The whole cast is dynamic and brilliant and they perfectly display the shows drab and fab contrast. Two stand out performances are from Sophie Wright who plays Lauren, Charlie’s quirky love interest who hilariously professes her love for Charlie through a comical song and dance number. Don, played by Joe Kosky, is also a fantastic addition to the cast. Big and burley, Don is the perfect contrast to Lola and helps drive the shows beautiful message of accepting people for who they are.
The props and sets are fun and versatile and range from colourful and glittering backdrops to brown bricks and worn down factory equipment (would love to have a dance on one of those shoe conveyor belts). The dance sequences are full of energy and the songs; well let’s just say Cyndi Lauper knows how to write a hit that will stay in your head.
The show ends with a spectacular song and dance sequence that sees the whole cast coming together and getting their kinky boots on….. I’ll take a pair of each style of boot please and thank you!
