Renowned Sydney hospitality group Applejack have opened their first Sydney CBD location. 60 Carrington Street is now home to Bopp & Tone, a Sydney-made restaurant and bar with Mediterranean influences and interiors by Luchetti Krelle. Bopp & Tone is a tribute to the Applejack founders’ grandfathers, Keith ‘Bopp’ Evans and Anthony ‘Tone’ Adams. The venue reflects the nostalgic and optimistic post WW2 era they lived in.

The Australian menu, created by Head Chef Sa Va’afusuaga and Group Executive Chef Jason Roberson, centres around honest and generous share food with Mediterranean influences, and is predominantly cooked on the in-house wood grill or charcoal oven. Using only the most seasonal produce the menu focuses on seafood and both cured and cooked meats.

Sydney Social 101 was recently treated to a romantic date night dinner at Bopp & Tone. As soon as we stepped into Bopp & Tone the dark wood and marble interiors transported us to the glamorous and decadent 1950s. We took our seats at a mustered coloured velvet booth and ordered a round of cocktails. The cocktail menu, developed by Lachy Sturrock and Craig Kerrison, features popular classic cocktails tailored with Australian ingredients and Mediterranean charm. I ordered the Rhubarb Sour: Pepperberry Altos Tequila, Italicus Bergamot, poached rhubarb, lemon, aquafaba while my date ordered the Wattleseed Old Fashioned: Wattleseed Makers Mark, Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, agave, bitters. Both cocktails were strong, full of flavour and beautifully presented.

After a serious discussion about what to order (everything looked so good!) we finally decided to order a combination of seafood dishes and vegetable dishes. To start we had the melt in your mouth Whole Hawkesbury River Calamari served with squid ink aioli, grilled lemon and the juicy and the fresh and delious Mooloolaba King Prawns garlic, chilli, oregano. Both dishes I would highly recommend.

Next we enjoyed the gentle-tasting Mackerel Fillet paired beautifully with capers, olives and anchovies. On the side we enjoyed the light and summery Peach, ricotta, mixed leaves and smoked almond salad and Fried Cauliflower with paprika yoghurt and dukka, mint which both perfectly complimented the fish.

We had absolutely no room for dessert, but you can’t say no to dessert. Am I right?? We opted for the light and full flavoured pineapple tarte tatin served with ice cream. The pastry was perfectly buttery, the pineapple was beautifully tangy and the carmel sauce was sweet and smooth.

The wait staff at Bopp & Tone made the dining experience relaxed and very special. They were tentative, warm and great with recommendations.

Bopp & Tone is the perfect place for a romantic date, a looonngg lunch with friends or an after work drink and nibbles on their alfresco dining terrace.
